Dynamical Evolution of Solids Subject to the Drag Force and the Self-Gravity of an Inhomogeneous and Marginally Gravitationally Unstable Disk
The results of an extensive numerical study of the orbital dynamics of small bodies ranging from micron-sized dust grains to 1 km objects subject to gas drag and also the gravitational attraction of a non-uniform gaseous nebula are presented. The results indicate that it is possible for small bodies to migrate rapidly toward the locations of the maxima of the gas density where the probabilities...
متن کاملOutward migration of a giant planet with a gravitationally unstable gap edge
We present numerical simulations of disc–planet interactions where the planet opens a gravitationally unstable gap in an otherwise gravitationally stable disc. In our disc models, where the outer gap edge can be unstable to global spiral modes, we find that as we increase the surface density scale the gap becomes more unstable and the planet migrates outwards more rapidly. We show that the posi...
متن کاملMigration of Protoplanets in Radiative Disks
Context. In isothermal disks the migration of protoplanets is directed inward. For small planetary masses the standard type I migration rates are so fast that this may result in an unrealistic loss of planets into the stars. Aims. We investigate the planet-disk interaction in non-isothermal disks and analyze the magnitude and direction of migration for an extended range of planet masses. Method...
متن کاملEvolution of Gravitationally Unstable de Sitter Compactifications
We study the time evolution of unstable dSp × S configurations with flux in theories of gravity with a cosmological constant. For certain values of the flux, we identify a stable configuration to which these unstable solutions flow. For other values of the flux the sphere wants to decompactify, regardless of the sign of the initial perturbation.
متن کاملReconnection in Marginally Collisionless Accretion Disk Coronae
We point out that a conventional construction placed upon observations of accreting black holes, in which their nonthermal X-ray spectra are produced by inverse comptonization in a coronal plasma, suggests that the plasma is marginally collisionless. Recent developments in plasma physics indicate that fast reconnection takes place only in collisionless plasmas. As has recently been suggested fo...
